NEW YORK – Unveiling the Masterful Artistry of Pencilworks Studio
Awe Inspiring Artwork
Step into quaint Pencilworks Studio in Little Falls, New Jersey. You will find yourself in a room adorned with awe-inspiring artwork. Can someone draw black, white, and grey so perfectly with a graphite pencil it makes you believe you are looking at a photograph? Jerry Winick can, and he shares his gifts with many.

Bodybuilder, Navy Veteran
Winick wasn’t always an artist. He attained his first taste of fame as a bodybuilder, even becoming Mr. New York. Winick appeared on the 1963 cover of Muscle Builder Magazine. He is a U.S. Navy veteran, and at age 40, went back to school to get his GED. He majored in Art Education, and he received a B because he was told he hadn’t learned a thing. Most importantly, if only the professors knew the success he has today.

Gift for Pencil Art is Self-taught
Winick said his gift for pencil art is self-taught. He wants his students to teach themselves. “When you figure out on your own, you own it,” Winick said. “Show them everything you know.”

When Winick was asked how he decided what pictures to draw when he first started this career. He said he picked dogs and cats, then realized he could draw anything.
Still-life, Portraits, and Animals
On display around the studio are compositions of NY Cityscapes, still-life, portraits, and animals. NY Cityscapes include titles like Gramercy Park, Brooklyn Bridge, and Central Park, to name a few. The depictions are so lifelike you’d swear you were living and breathing in the locations.

Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees
The still-life drawings are so lifelike you ask yourself if they were shot with a digital camera, such as one entitled Silver Teapots. The magnificent portraits of lions, elephants, and leopards expose the souls of every animal depicted in the poses. New York Yankees, such as Aaron Judge, and team drawings of the New York Giants greats are mesmerizing.
When Winick was asked what all the drawings had in common, he said, “They have a full range of tones—blacks, whites, and greys.”
First Prize
Winick and his art-accomplished wife Karen used to do plenty of outdoor art shows. They were happy to share he always won first place. His drawings are so perfect that judges would award him first prize in photography. Shoosh, don’t tell anyone it’s not a photograph!

Drawing of President Obama
Perhaps Winick’s greatest portrait and accomplishment is his drawing of President Obama portrayed in a pensive pose with a teardrop in the corner of his eye. It was the moment of his press conference after Sandy Hook.
The portrait will be on display in the Obama Presidential Library at the Presidential Center Museum on the South side of Chicago, expected to open in 2026. Winick’s genius will be on display in a celebrated venue allowing global visitors to witness his extraordinary talents.
