NEW YORK – Dowling’s at the Carlyle

On a rainy evening, I met a girlfriend at Hotel Carlyle for dinner at Dowling’s restaurant at the Carlyle.

The Carlyle Restaurant, as it was previously known, closed in March 2020 and is now Dowlings at The Carlyle. The restaurant is run by executive Chef Sylvain Delpique of 21 Club fame.

The menu at Dowling’s highlights classic American and European dishes, including oysters, steak tartare, and escargot as starters and entrées, including whole branzino, chicken paillard, and a burger served with fries. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Dowling’s is named after the hotel’s former owner, Robert Whittle Dowling, who bought and elevated the hotel’s status in the ‘40s. The 80-seat dining room, with dark wooden walls and leather banquettes, was designed by New York’s Tonychi Studio. The interior honors the hotel’s history, highlighting former decorator Dorothy Draper and illustrator Ludwig Bemelmans; the restaurant features newly acquired prints and paintings paying homage to the “Madeline” author.

There is a more intimate area where you can meet for a drink just a few steps from the restaurant entry.

What to order?

Well, first came a plate of fabulous, fresh, warm bread for two.

Not famished, I ordered the Faroe Island Salmon without the Parmesan Crust but with Artichoke Barigoule, Swiss Chard, and English Pea Puree. Of course, I had them put everything on the side! I know what you’re thinking: it’s a diminutive serving of salmon for such a big plate, but it was tasty and more than enough with the Artichoke Barigoule on the side.
