A Tribute to Chita Rivera at Café Carlyle – she doesn’t just take the stage at Café Carlyle, she hoists it over her shoulder and walks off with it and so in love with being on a stage that you wonder what pitiful amount of energy she might have left to devote to other matters.
Jazz lovers will want to see and hear the Arthur Kell Speculation Quartet. With the opening sounds tonight at the fabulous Smalls Jazz Club set in Manhattan’s West Village, one sensed the culmination of 50 years of evolution of fusion first expressed by Chick Corea, Gary Burton, and Wayne Shorter.
It was a New York night with Russ Lorenson at the Triad. Artists flying in from all over, including Guatemala, for this one-night-only performance. All went out of their way to celebrate the release of Russ’s recording, “Standard Time: Live in New York.” He recorded the album at the Metropolitan Room back in 2008, with the original release date being 2009; however, due to circumstances, it was put on hold. Then he was diagnosed with tonsil cancer (he is now in total remission and doing great).
Celebrating New Year’s Eve at Rossini’s Italian Restaurant is a special pairing since it’s my birthday. So, I get to celebrate two fun evenings in one. I wound up in Rossini’s Italian Restaurant at 108 East 38th Street this New Year’s Eve. I enjoyed the experience!
The Orrin Evans Holiday Extravaganza at Birdland was electric with a festive spirit as the big band took to the stage, adorned with shimmering decorations, glittering lights and guest stars Michelle Lordi, Alexia Bontempo, JD Walter, and Milton Suggs.
