Paul & Jimmy’s Ristorante: Northern Italian Cuisine
It’s NYC Restaurant Week, and a Chilling New York Night Leads to a Culinary Haven
On a bone-chilling night in New York City, when the wind howled through the streets, and icy gusts stung exposed skin, I was drawn to the warmth of Paul & Jimmy’s Ristorante. Nestled at 123 East 18th Street in Gramercy, this charming establishment was a mere block from my apartment—convenient enough to override any temptation to stay bundled up at home.

Stepping Into History
Stepping inside was like crossing into another world—a haven of old-school hospitality. The glow of soft lighting reflected off wood-paneled walls, and the scent of simmering garlic, herbs, and rich tomato sauce greeted me like an old friend. There’s something about a restaurant with history, and Paul & Jimmy’s proudly wears its seven decades of culinary tradition.
The Legacy of Paul & Jimmy’s
The Azzollini Family’s Journey
The story behind this institution is as rich as the Bolognese sauce that has been ladled onto plates for generations. In 1955, the Azzollini family left their coastal hometown of Molfetta, Italy, and made their way to New York in search of opportunity. Like so many before him, the elder Azzollini started small—waiting tables at Paul & Jimmy’s before taking a leap of faith and purchasing the restaurant. What began as a modest dream has since flourished into a beloved landmark frequented by governors, mayors, musicians, actors, and even a few of New York’s more infamous families. (A discreet inquiry with the staff about these “guests” may yield some fascinating tales.)

A Restaurant Steeped in Tradition
Despite the notable clientele, Paul & Jimmy’s remains refreshingly unpretentious. The place where a well-dressed couple might linger over Chianti in a corner booth while a group of friends shares a round of laughter over heaping plates of pasta. It’s the food, after all, that keeps people coming back. And that night, I was about to find out why.

A Culinary Experience to Savor
The Tempting Menu
The menu—a trove of Northern Italian delights—offers a prix-fixe dinner at a remarkably reasonable $49.95, an excellent value given the caliber of the cuisine. But I had my sights set elsewhere: a whole roasted Mediterranean branzino prepared with garlic, olive oil, white wine, lemon, and herbs.

The Prelude: Warm Italian Bread
Before that, however, the obligatory basket of golden-crusted Italian bread was still warm from the oven. It was accompanied by a dish of olive oil so fragrant with peppery spice that it deserved a moment of appreciation.

The Star of the Evening: Mediterranean Branzino
Then came the star of the evening: the branzino. It arrived glistening and perfectly cooked, its flesh delicate and infused with the essence of citrus and wine. With a gentle nudge of my fork, the crisped skin gave way, revealing buttery, flaky meat beneath. Alongside it, a crisp-on-the-outside, creamy-on-the-inside potato croquette and a medley of vibrant vegetables completed the plate—a masterful balance of simplicity and elegance.

Exceptional Service, Memorable Experience
Much like the food, the service was impeccable—attentive yet unobtrusive, with just enough warmth to make you feel like family. No wonder Paul & Jimmy’s has stood the test of time.
