I recently had the pleasure of meeting a friend for dinner at Avra Madison Estiatorio, located at 14 East 60th Street—right between Madison Avenue’s elegance and the storied charm of Fifth Avenue. The setting alone whispered anticipation. But it was what unfolded inside that truly awakened the senses.

Here’s a quick preview from @avraestiatorio on Instagram:

A Glimpse into Avra’s Story

According to their website, the soul of Avra originates in the coastal Greek village of Nafpaktos, where co-founder Nick Tsoulos was born and raised. He recalls fishing trips with his father and uncles, returning with glistening fagri, dorado, octopus, and red mullet—later grilled or thinly sliced, then dressed simply with olive oil from their family farm, lemon, and sea salt.

Meals included garden-fresh salads, his grandmother’s legendary spinach pies, and local wine—a symphony of simplicity and authenticity.

After immigrating to Astoria, Queens, the Tsoulos family brought their culinary DNA with them. In 1990, Nick opened Trata, a Greek taverna on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. But he envisioned something even more ambitious. In collaboration with Marc Packer and Nick Pashalis, he opened the first Avra Estiatorio in Midtown East in 2000. The success was resounding, and in 2016, Avra Madison opened on 60th Street, instantly becoming a magnet for celebrities, business leaders, and discerning food lovers.

Today, Avra thrives not only in New York but also in Beverly Hills, Miami, and at Rockefeller Center, staying true to its promise of fresh, beautifully prepared Greek fare and a warm, celebratory atmosphere.

First Impressions: The Welcome Begins

It was after reading Avra’s origin story, sent to me by my friend, that I decided we must try it. And yes, it was worth it.

As we were seated, we were welcomed with warm pita bread and creamy hummus, the kind that speaks of both comfort and craftsmanship. The pita had a delicate char, just enough to hint at the flame, while the hummus was rich, silky, and kissed with olive oil. A simple start—but deeply satisfying.

The Main Event: Roasted Organic Chicken

The menu was a feast in itself. From the display of fresh whole fish chilled on ice to glistening shrimp and lamb chops, every dish seemed a masterpiece waiting to happen. But I followed instinct and tradition—I ordered the Roasted Organic Chicken with lemon-roasted potato wedges.

And here’s where things moved from excellent to extraordinary.

The chicken arrived glistening, its skin golden and crisped to perfection, subtly crackling beneath my knife. The meat inside was unbelievably moist, infused with delicate herbal aromatics and the bright zing of citrus. But the revelation was the lemon-crusted potatoes—pillowy inside, their edges caramelized and just crisp, soaked in a reduction of lemon, olive oil, and pan drippings.

It was, without question, the finest rendition of roasted chicken and potatoes I have ever had.

The Finale: Nature’s Sweetest Ending

For dessert, I chose the individual plate of fresh fruit, served elegantly and chilled. Juicy melons, ripe strawberries, ruby red grapes, and citrus segments—no syrups or sauces, just nature’s perfection presented with finesse. A clean, light finish that left me perfectly content.

Reflections

As we lingered over the last bites, I realized something: this wasn’t just a meal—it was a journey. From the coastal soul of Nafpaktos to a dining room bathed in candlelight and the hum of the city, Avra Madison Estiatorio delivered a timeless, transporting experience. The food, the setting, and the heritage—all harmonized beautifully.

Reservations are strongly recommended, as this is no secret gem. It’s a beloved fixture for locals and visitors alike. And trust me—once you go, you’ll be counting the days until your return.
