New Jersey-certified elementary school teacher Lori Tartaglia, with a B.A. in Psychology, has written Nothing Stays the Same: How to Heal After the Heartbreak of Divorce for those navigating the aftereffects of divorce. According to the American Psychological Association, approximately 40-50% of first marriages end in divorce, with second marriages reportedly having an even higher percentage rate of failure. Forbes Advisor contributing writer Christy Bieber, J.D., provides statistical input on a graph in her May 4th article entitled Revealing Divorce Statistics in 2023, showing divorce rates have declined since 2002. Yet most of us know far too many casualties of dissolved marriages.

Painful Divorces

Tartaglia has personal experience, having traversed two painful divorces. Unfortunately, our lives rarely emulate our parents. Her parents were married for decades and should have given her the tools to stay together, living by example. Tartaglia’s father often ended family conversations, saying, “Nothing stays the same,” as a positive reinforcement of life’s difficulties. Tartaglia realized she needed to take those words to heart after the divorce and take steps to help others.

Tangled Aftermath

Readers of Tartaglia’s book should ask why divorce is prevalent and how they can navigate the tangled aftermath of pain, grief, and healing. Meanwhile, her book has a plethora of answers.

Life Coaches

Eleven chapters discuss what Tartaglia learned from other books, seminars, and courses she enrolled in. She became a Robbins-Madanes Strategic Intervention coach. She trained with two highly accomplished and respected life coaches, Tony Robbins and Cloe Madanes. Then, she worked with support groups for those separated and divorced. Accordingly, since her work with these two life coaches, Tartaglia can help you see improvements in yourself if you want to heal.

A “To Do” List

This self-help book is filled with verbal suggestions and includes separate “To Do” checklists at the end of each chapter. There’s also a section entitled “Reflection,” where readers can reflect on the recommendations made in the past chapter they read. There are additionally hundreds of suggested books by other authors, like Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence, which you might read on your path to healing. Clearly, Tartaglia did substantial research on these titles despite every suggestion not fitting everyone’s journey.

Readers will see a snippet of themselves in every chapter, no matter where they are in the divorce process. Some quotes from spirituals, like Ram Dass, and professionals like Tony Robbins, may have strength in the messages that give you a hand up.

Minimizing Your Pain

Tartaglia doesn’t spend the entire book on her personal experience but does offer deep insight into how she made it through her divorce healthier. In Tartaglia’s view, “Your thoughts are the key to everything, and your thoughts are the key to minimizing your pain.”

Ultimately, readers will pick ideas from Tartaglia’s book that mends their life, and most will understand that nothing staying the same is for the better.
