A Culinary Jewel in Gramercy Park
New York City hums with the chatter of Restaurant Week enthusiasts eagerly marking their calendars for an affordable taste of fine dining. Gramercy Tavern stands apart among the city’s cherished institutions —a sanctuary of contemporary American cuisine, warm hospitality, and an ambiance steeped in understated elegance.
Here’s a preview of one of Gramercy Tavern’s many delicious specialties from Pastry Chef Karen Demasco:
Nestled on 42 East 20th Street, this culinary beacon continues to charm patrons after nearly three decades of unwavering excellence.

Respect for Local Ingredients
Founded in 1994 by Danny Meyer, a restaurateur known for his refined hospitality, Gramercy Tavern embodies all the delightful aspects of dining in New York City. Located in a historic building just north of Union Square, the restaurant has earned nine James Beard Awards, including “Outstanding Restaurant” and “Outstanding Chef in America.” Under the leadership of Chef Michael Anthony, the constantly changing menu narrates a story of dedication, sustainability, and respect for local ingredients.

A Restaurant Week Delight at Gramercy Tavern
During Restaurant Week, a visit to Gramercy Tavern turns from a luxury into an enjoyable culinary experience. Usually, a meal in The Dining Room requires a $175 prix-fixe commitment, but we enjoyed a three-course feast for just $60 for this occasion.

Upon stepping inside, diners must choose their setting—The Tavern, a relaxed, rustic space with an à la carte menu, or The Dining Room, an elegant, refined experience. For this special occasion, we opted for the grandeur of The Dining Room, ready to embark on a carefully crafted culinary journey.

The Prelude: A Golden Welcome
Before glancing at the menu, a delicate amuse-bouche arrived: golden beet tartare on rye, cradled in a whisper of crème fraîche and topped with a sprig of dill. This unassuming bite was revelatory—earthy, tangy, and impossibly smooth—priming the palate for what was to come.

Starters: An Ode to Freshness
To begin, I selected the Broccolini Salad, a vibrant medley of almonds, raisins, and freekeh. The nutty crunch of the grains mingled with the sweetness of the raisins, while broccolini—blanched to perfection—offered a bright, vegetal snap. Every bite reminded me of how simplicity can be extraordinary when executed with precision.

The Main Event: A Harmonious Symphony of Flavors
For my entrée, I celebrated the seasonal brilliance of Brussels sprouts with lentils, pine nuts, and apricots. The dish arrived resembling a rustic pot pie but without the expected crust. Instead, a crown of delicate greens surrounded a bed of tender lentils, their heartiness highlighted by the toasty warmth of pine nuts and the surprise of the gentle sweetness of apricots.

With each forkful, flavors mingled seamlessly—the earthiness of legumes, the caramelized depth of sprouts, the crunch of pine nuts, and the fruit’s juicy contrast. It was a revelation, a dish that spoke to ingenuity and the ability to balance bold, seasonal flavors with finesse.
Sweet Surrender: A Tart to Remember
Dessert arrived as an Apple and Quince Tart, kissed with cinnamon, caramel, and pecans. The portion was petite—enough to satisfy without overwhelming, a welcome restraint in a city where decadence often knows no bounds. The buttery crust cradled tender fruit slices; their natural tartness softened by the caramel’s silkiness. Each bite was a delightful interplay of textures and temperatures, leaving me in awe of its understated perfection.

The Grand Finale: An Unexpected Surprise
Just as I thought my Gramercy Tavern experience had concluded, a small treasure arrived at the table—a Bon Bon sparkling with gold dust. This delicate chocolate contained a luscious orange jam center enveloped in velvety chai ganache. The dark chocolate exterior provided just the right amount of bittersweet contrast, rounding out the meal in an indulgent yet sophisticated flourish.
