MJ the Musical

Jackson is a playful, soulful, dedicated artist as only Nottage could script. She humanizes MJ into a man to whom we relate and love. Even the skeptics in the audience paused to entertain something rare today – the other side of the story. Hearing MJ speak up for himself was powerful. Frost’s soft-spoken and demure manner made us lean in to hear what he was saying. His peaceful demeanor allures and provides the space to understand more than is simply stated.

SIX The Musical

There is something inherently wrong with a plot that features two women arguing over who has it worse off – one with three miscarriages or the other with five. Loosely based on the historical six wives of England’s King Henry VIII, the plot is a contest among the Tudor women to see who has suffered the most. Each wife panders to the audience, expressing their woes to be selected as the biggest loser. Midway they realize the absurdity of their arguing, and that the only thing that unifies them is a man. They decide to stop bickering, end the contest, and focus on a final musical number denoting their reconciliation.

Witness

“I come from, well it doesn’t matter, the town doesn’t even exist anymore in Russia,” says Igor Golyak, the director of Witness, “and if we can’t feel safe in America, where are we to go – what is next? Assimilation?” What Golyak does not say is haunting; the silence during a talkback after the show — what is not said lingers in consciousness when the interview concludes.

Morning After Grace

We are in an upscale stereotypical baby-boomer Florida retirement condo with plush furniture, a well-stocked open kitchen with counter seating, wall décor with beach themes, and light gray walls with white trim and crown molding.

West Side Story

An excited full house eagerly anticipated this Opening Night of West Side Story, its pathos intensified by today’s passing of our beloved bard Stephen Sondheim. As such, we were honored to participate in what became a celebration of West Side Story’s depiction of a doomed couple we love, akin to Romeo and Juliet, Aida and Radames, and Tristan and Isolde.

Approval Junkie

This talented, and one could say overachiever, has pulled together poignant and cheerful snippets of her life’s experiences based on her book, “Approval Junkie: Adventures in Caring Too Much,” to make her Off-Broadway debut in a one-woman show. The story isn’t just about caring too much. It’s about caring what other people think, and finding the solution to happiness is about loving yourself and fulfilling your expectations.

Trevor The Musical

When Holden William Hagelberger as Trevor opens his mouth in Trevor the Musical and belts out the first song “Do You Know/On With the Show,” the audience realizes they will enjoy this production, no matter what the storyline is. The fantastic voice and natural acting talents of young Hagelberger are on display throughout this two-act play, set in fictional Lakeview Junior High School in 1981.

The Woman in Black

The mood is set from the moment you enter the theater and the play begins. An amazing full moon casting shadows over the gravesite scene is as stirring as the seashells illuminated haphazardly at the edge of the stage flickering throughout the acts.
