The Vision Behind Immersive Mozart

Ever the affable host and insightful conductor, David Bernard greeted the audience with warmth and excitement. As he introduced the evening, he explained the immersive nature of this concert. This approach places audience members within the orchestra, allowing them to feel the visceral power of the music from within.

With a nod to Amadeus, the Oscar-winning film that reintroduced Mozart to contemporary audiences, Bernard framed the night’s program as a cinematic experience in sound. The film’s legendary opening motif—drawn from Mozart’s Symphony No. 25 in G minor, K. 183—set the stage for an evening of Sturm und Drang, masterful dialogue between soloists, and an orchestral palette painted with fiery passion.

Symphony No. 25 in G Minor: A Storm of Emotion

From the moment Bernard’s baton descended, the orchestra erupted into the electrifying opening of Mozart’s Symphony No. 25 in G minor, K. 183. The dramatic syncopations and urgent string tremolos created an atmosphere of immediate, unrelenting tension. G minor, a key Mozart employed sparingly, was reserved for his most storm-tossed expressions, making this symphony an early masterpiece of raw intensity.

Seated among the musicians, the audience could feel the visceral pulse of the work. The horns’ ominous calls and the violins’ surging lines brought a story of turmoil and defiance to life. The second movement offered a lyrical reprieve, momentarily calming the tempest before the storm returned in full force. The finale’s furious energy built to a climax that left the audience breathless, proving once again that Mozart—despite his short life—could conjure a sound world that remains timeless.

The Enchantment of Sinfonia Concertante

After the symphony’s turbulent grandeur, the stage was set for a moment of poignant beauty. Enter violinist Sean Lee and violist Katharina Kang Litton, who took center stage for Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major, K. 364. From the first notes, their sound wove an intricate dialogue—violin soaring with a golden radiance, viola responding with depth and pathos.

Their playing was seamless, their phrasing deeply expressive. The second movement, an aching Andante, became a meditation on loss and longing, its melodies seemingly suspended in the air like whispered secrets. By the time the joyous finale burst forth, the audience was transported, basking in the sheer exuberance of Mozart’s effervescent spirit.

Symphony No. 40: A Farewell of Fire

The final work of the evening, Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550, brought the concert to a towering conclusion. Its restless opening theme, instantly recognizable, carried the weight of existential struggle. The Park Avenue Chamber Symphony delivered a reading that was taut with urgency, filled with the chiaroscuro contrasts that define Mozart’s late works.

Bernard guided the orchestra with a masterful sense of pacing, allowing the music to breathe yet never losing momentum.
