Tonight was David Dean Bottrell: The Death of Me Yet at Pangea in New York City’s East Village. The high-energy storyteller slapped himself, immediately capturing the audience’s attention and earning laughs. Bottrell began his one-man show consisting of a series of stories about his life that, while appearing to be individual, were, in the end, connected and universal.
From the onset, Cold Feet was saucy with an eccentric style of humor, bizarre characters like Shelly the orangutan with her goofy grunts and screams, and off-the-wall skits. Laughs were guaranteed through the sequences of impudence, knee-slapping silliness, physical comedy, parody, surrealism, and wordplay.
Seinfeld launched into a routine about the way New Yorkers speak. “You can live ‘in’ the city, but you live ‘on’ Long Island. You can live ‘in’ The Hamptons, but you don’t live ‘on’ them.” But he didn’t stop there, and the theatergoers loved it.
Misrahi is a boyish, lovable character who is bawdy, irreverent, clever, and entertaining with repartee and humor as delightful as his singing. His selection of songs seems to spring from biographical sentiment, and while he can sing to be funny, he can also touch hearts with the intense pathos, sadness, and beauty he expresses in songs like Sondheim’s “One More Kiss” from Follies. The song ended with a whisper, silence, and thunderous applause.
Comedians tackle the great debate of talk vs. text. Two teams 5 minutes a piece argue their case, and then the anchor on each team gets 7 minutes to wrap. The audience applause denotes the winner. You probably think the talk team won since the winner was recognized verbally – WRONG. Texting won by a razor-slim margin hardly audible.
