Storytelling needs a good story. This is one of the best stories I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. A story that is all the more incredible because it is true.

As I made my way up the stairs of the theater after the show, I kept saying, “Wow. Wow. They really did that? That really happened?” And rewinding the story in my head to see where the pieces fit and how they led one to another, linking themselves to the surprising and incredulous ending.

Martin Dockery’s, Every Good Story Ends With One, is a tale of unexpected moments that climb on top of one another, akin to cheerleaders creating a pyramid or trapeze artists balancing on thin wires whilst juggling flames of fire, culminating in a finale that I did not see coming.

The story is set at The Adelaide Fringe Festival in Australia where Dockery was appearing in his one-man show, Wanderlust, about his experience of self-discovery in Africa. He was performing at the most popular venue, The Garden of Unearthly Delights, hanging out with newfound performer friends, and feeling down as his show was not clicking with his audience and he was slotted to do 30 performances. It was going to be a long, long month. Near the end, though, he started receiving letters from a fan who loved his show. LOVED! These letters will become life-affirming for him, they will change everything, and he will even go on to win The Advertiser & Critics Circle Award at the Festival. But who is this fan known as Erin? What are her true motives behind her fanatic fandom?

The title Every Good Story Ends With One will be elucidated by Dockery, the congenial, affable, every man who finds himself in a fairy tale Topsy Turfy narrative and, to our delight, does not resist but takes the trip wholeheartedly.

I am not giving you any more about this performance because the journey must be taken only by the innocent and open, so keep an eye on Martin’s website for the next time he performs Every Good Story Ends With One.

However, the lucky ones who live in the five boroughs of New York still have several chances to experience this wonderful storyteller who has won 50 fringe circuit awards along his remarkable journey.

You may have missed Every Good Story Ends With One, but you still have the chance to see Dockery at Soho Playhouse.  Martin Dockery’s upcoming NYC Performances are all at Soho Playhouse.

He is an exceptional, sublime storyteller and performer. Take yourself as a gift for the coming holidays.
