Tonight’s performance by Ballet Hispánico was a triumphant celebration of heritage and innovation!

Last evening at New York City Center, Ballet Hispánico delivered a breathtaking interpretation of Gustavo Ramírez Sansano‘s CARMEN.maquia, transforming Bizet’s timeless opera into a visceral contemporary dance experience. This performance marked both the 150th anniversary of Carmen and Ballet Hispánico’s 55th Emerald Anniversary season, creating a perfect storm of artistic celebration.

A Temple of Kinetic Poetry

The Ballet Hispánico dancers transformed New York City Center into a temple of kinetic poetry, where every gesture carried the weight of passion and the lightness of profound artistry. Their movements possessed an intoxicating blend of raw power and ethereal grace—bodies that could explode into fierce, angular expressions one moment and melt into fluid, serpentine lines the next.

The ensemble’s technical virtuosity was breathtaking. Dancers like Antonio Cangiano and Amanda del Valle demonstrated remarkable agility, seamlessly executing complex lifts and intricate partnering. Yet beyond the technical mastery lay something deeper—an expressiveness that transcended mere movement to become pure emotional communication.

Each dancer embodied Carmen’s untamed spirit differently, creating a kaleidoscope of interpretation within Sansano’s cohesive vision. Their faces told stories as vividly as their bodies, conveying the tragedy and triumph of love with devastating honesty. The way they inhabited Bizet’s musical phrases was magnetic, breathing life into every crescendo and diminuendo.

Audiences will fall in love with this ensemble because they don’t simply dance; they live it. Their collective energy creates an irresistible gravitational pull, drawing viewers into Carmen’s world of passion and peril. This is dance that speaks directly to the soul, reminding us why live performance remains one of humanity’s most powerful art forms.

The Choreographic Vision

Under the masterful direction of Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, CARMEN.maquia reimagines the classic tale of Carmen through the lens of tauromaquia—the art of bullfighting—creating a powerful metaphor for desire, power, and destruction. Sansano’s choreography fuses contemporary dance with passionate nods to Spanish paso doble and flamenco, resulting in a movement that feels both authentic and revolutionary.

The narrative is transformed from a simple tale of love and jealousy into a sophisticated metaphor where the dynamics of bullfighting—the dance between matador and bull, predator and prey, dominance and submission—mirror the fatal attraction between Carmen and Don José.

Movement Language Fusion

Rather than relying on the original libretto’s dialogue and vocal narrative, Sansano creates a purely physical storytelling approach that fuses Contemporary dance techniques, Spanish paso doble rhythms and movements, Flamenco influences, and Picasso-inspired angular aesthetics

Structural Reimagining in the Art of Dance

The choreographer maintains the essential dramatic arc but restructures it through dance-specific storytelling. In the Prelude, we see Don José in his prison cell, staging the entire work as a psychological flashback. The audience experiences a non-linear narrative as the story unfolds through memory and consciousness rather than chronological events. Visual metaphors are effectively utilized, and in the cards scene, for example, it becomes a moment of physical prophecy rather than sung dialogue.

Cultural Lens Transformation

While Mérimée’s novella and the Meilhac/Halévy libretto presented Carmen through a 19th-century French perspective on Spanish culture, Sansano approaches the material through contemporary Latino artistic sensibilities, bringing authentic cultural understanding to movements and dramatic interpretation.

Contemporary Relevance

Sansano strips away the period-specific elements to focus on the timeless psychological dynamics—obsession, freedom, possession, and destruction—making them speak to contemporary audiences through the universal language of the body in motion.

In this approach, CARMEN.maquia honors the source material while creating something entirely new—a work that captures Carmen’s essence without the boundaries of the original’s specific cultural and temporal constraints.

The work’s Picasso-inspired aesthetic brought angular beauty to every gesture, while the dancers embodied Carmen’s untamed spirit with remarkable physicality and emotional depth.

Musical Brilliance and Sonic Landscapes

The evening’s sonic foundation rested upon Bizet’s immortal score, performed by the Slovak Philharmonic, Prague Philharmonic, and Ensemble Carmen Fantasy. These recorded performances provided a rich tapestry of sound that elevated every moment of dance. Pablo de Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy, performed by the Apollo Symphony Orchestra, added layers of virtuosic brilliance that perfectly complemented the dancers’ technical prowess.

Outstanding Performances

The Ballet Hispánico company dancers delivered performances of extraordinary intensity and precision. Each artist brought unique artistry to their roles, creating a cohesive ensemble that pulsed with collective energy while allowing individual brilliance to shine through.

Antonio Cangiano and Amanda del Valle, among others, demonstrated the technical mastery and emotional commitment that have made Ballet Hispánico America’s premier Latino dance company. Their interpretation of Carmen’s complex narrative—from seduction to tragedy—held the audience spellbound throughout both acts.

Visual Artistry and Design

Luis Crespo’s set designs created an atmospheric backdrop that enhanced rather than overwhelmed the choreography. Emilio Lavarias’s lighting design painted the stage with shadows and brilliance, while David Delfín’s costume design added visual poetry to every movement.

New York City Center: The Perfect Stage

The Neo-Moorish splendor of New York City Center provided an ideal venue for this celebration of cultural fusion. Since 1943, this Manhattan landmark has served as a beacon for accessible performing arts, and last evening’s performance continued that proud tradition.

The theater’s intimate yet grand atmosphere allowed every nuance of Sansano’s choreography to resonate with the audience, creating the kind of transformative experience that makes live performance irreplaceable.
