NEW YORK – Empire the Musical at New World Stages

Get Ready!

Get Set!

EMPIRE the Musical opened at New World Stages on July 1!

This is the story of the men who built our American/World treasure standing on the corner of 34th and Fifth Avenue in New York City. About the dreamers, the workers defied gravity and created a structure that captured the hearts and imaginations of the world and broadened our belief of what was possible.

The Empire State Building was completed on May 1, 1931. At 102 stories, it was, at the time, the tallest building in the world. It immediately became a tourist destination. It was built by the Mohawk Skywalkers. Most of the skyscrapers of New York were built by the Skywalkers; all young men from the Mohawk indigenous nation had an inner balance and grace that allowed them to walk on the narrow beams and be adept at working at high altitudes. They were known as the “Fearless Wonders.”

This is their story, the story of the Skywalkers and a building that captured the awe and wonder of the twentieth century. The past had the Great Pyramids of Giza, the lost city of Petra, the Parthenon, the Colosseum, and now a new spectacle of what humans could create rose from the earth, a building that lives in and embraces the sky.

I had the honor and pleasure of hearing some of the musical numbers today, with the entire cast, at a rehearsal studio on 42nd Street, and even with no set, no costumes, and the stark lighting of a rehearsal room, I was moved. Moved to heartfelt joy and tears. The production opens with a song sung in Kanien’kéha, the Mohawk language, sung as a mother makes bread with her sons. Written in the Mohawk language, it is a beautiful song that starts what is a fantastic show!
