Obit at the Theater for the New City

Rebecca Chace’s new play, Obit, is a twist on the old story of an academic taking advantage of their student, or in this case their student’s mother. It is full of rich, smart dialogue and opens with the premise that New York Times obit writer Maya Hawthorne (Carolyn Holding) has come to the home of esteemed, aging College President Phillip Stern (the always great Richard Topol) to interview him for his obituary. Most newspapers and television news stations stockpile “advance obituaries” of prominent and public figures. Often, they interview the individuals and family members well before their death so that they may craft a more personal obit and have it ready when needed.

Public Works’ PUBLIC RECORD

The presentation of Public Records is the records of our lives. Much more than the certificates handed out at birth, marriage, and death. What happened in front of us exploded through dance, song, and storytelling, stepped out from the everyday to the extraordinary: The tap tap tap of water drops as the A/C of the neighbor above you drips onto yours, the music of the constant sirens, the call to prayer of different religious denominations, hyper aware on the subway while simultaneously looking unbothered, what it is like to the live in the proximity of other’s armpits, the coo of mourning doves, pots clunking out of windows during Covid, when the towers fell and we couldn’t look at one another without breaking down, and the reaching out and giving back when the need was present.

The Invention of Love

The Invention of Love is playwright Tom Stoppard’s contextually complex love letter to classical scholar and poet A.E. Housman. The play opens with Housman (David Greenspan) dead and waiting for the ferryman Chabon (Annabel Capper) to take him across the River Styx. On the trip across, Housman encounters his life, particularly his school life and deep love for Moses Jackson (José Espinosa). Young Housman (Yaron Lotan) and Jackson are schoolmates and good friends. Housman would like more. Housman is deeply in love. Love that is never touched, that is left without any rhetoric, is a grief that never ends. That person will always be with you. Dormant at times but always there.

Touch at The Tank

Set in Del Ray, Florida, Touch, written by Lori Goodman, is a play about lifting oneself and moving on. About what it’s like to date at a mature age when the pickings are limited and those that are available are so set in their ways. Touch introduces us to Betty (Carole Forman), a widow whose son, Jim (Alex Brightwell), also living in Florida, is her main friend and companion. Jim is doing all he can for his mother and trying not to go crazy with daily calls and repetitive conversations. Bob (Willie C. Carpenter), a widower living in the same community, lost his wife and met Maureen (June Ballinger ) at the local grocery store.
