If you are Tina Landau and Adam Guettel, you would know that the premiere of Floyd Collins was presented in 1994 in Philadelphia, and 1996 was the year it premiered Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons. Its Broadway premiere was a mere 29 years later and has now taken a bow at Lincoln Center. It’s a good thing they waited so long, because Jeremy Jordan (Floyd Collins) clearly needed to grow into a man and be ready to take on the title role.
Mark (Mark Moses) is a successful and, more importantly, DIVORCED lawyer living in Colorado. The kids are grown, and he is looking for a new chapter that may be sitting right in front of him. Helen (Melissa Gilbert) is a successful author with no children and no romantic relationship anywhere. The flame is rekindled, and the game is afoot. We see this coming from the opening moments. There is nothing new or intriguing here. There is quite a bit of cutesy that feels appliquéd. Neither of these characters is cutesy.
From the first act, the audience roared with laughter, proving Shakespeare’s imagination and understanding of human complexity transcends centuries. The play is presented as a fairy tale where intertwining plots and subplots keep you riveted by the action on stage.
At the center of this storm is Audra McDonald as Rose. She is the locomotive that pulls this show along and so much the center that everything else, including the cast members, pretty much pales in comparison.
Watching O’Hara and D’Arcy James in Days of Wine and Roses is both thrilling and exhausting. These two thoroughbreds navigate this difficult and overwritten score with grace and self-assurance. Every song that O’Hara sings is an aria. D’Arcy James takes on his music with the precision of a fencing master. This is a master class in every way.
Chez Josephine in New York’s Theater District was the brainchild of Jean-Claude Baker from Burgundy, who named his restaurant after his adoptive mother, Josephine Baker. Baker, born Freda Josephine McDonald, was an American-born naturalized French citizen famed as a dancer, singer, and actress.
Barbetta, excellent food, ambiance, preparation, and the wait staff were excellent.
