We will wait.
Welcome back.
A FREEKY INTRODUCTION – Don’t let the title fool you. The only thing freeky about “A Freeky Introduction” is the astonishing amount of love, smarts, and hope that one person – NSangou Njikam (Freeky Dee) – can fit into one tight 85 minutes, never mind one theatre. With the aid of his DJ and sidekick DJ Monday Blue, Njikam leaps onto the stage and into our hearts. You don’t have a chance to deny him, because he is that slick. The deed is done before you realize it. S-L-I-C-K!!!
In the script, he describes himself thusly – FREEKY DEE- half Man, half Amazing—a mix of Esu, Signifying Monkey, comedian, minister, poet, and Emcee.
After being welcomed musically by DJ Monday Blue (she is the musical guide extraordinaire) Freeky Dee begins with a parable about an eagle who thought he was a vulture. Next up, he tells us his purpose:
“By Divine Decree, I am sent here to satirize, paro-dize, and mytho-size all up and down your thighs. “
And THAT is only the half of it. Freeky Dee doles out wisdom nonstop. Honestly, I cannot tell you too much more than that because we, the audience, took an oath to keep our Freek learning to ourselves and only share it by the deeds we do as part of our Freek Training.
Let me tell you it was something we leapt at. Freeky Dee is part griot, part snake charmer, part Three Card Monte dealer, and part Shell Game aficionado. The difference is that when he is in charge, everybody wins. Even he wins when he shares the story of a mythical love that changed his life (as his father predicted). Because of his downfall, he was sent out into the world to preach the good news.
Which is this: EVERYONE has a FREEK (not FREAK) inside them. And handing the wheel over to that entity might be the best thing you can do. It is the ultimate guide. FREEK is a combination of all your best bits, your lightbulb moments, your hunches, your lessons turned to blessings, the seed of destiny in every choice.
ALL THAT. And NSangou Njika is your Tour Guide Supreme.
And don’t bother looking FREEKY up in AI because I tried that.
Instead, get yourself over to Atlantic Stage II.
