Opening with Innovation: “Nos Da” Sets the Tone

The set opened with “Nos Da,” a collaboration between Gabriel Pérez (Sabeth’s father) and Sabeth Pérez herself, featuring the vocalist and alto (and soprano) saxophonist Nicola Caminiti in a striking unison avant-garde be-bop style syllabic duet. Pérez began with an a cappella obligato that was chromatic and angular, emerging like a stream of consciousness—a musical technique that would become a recurring theme throughout the evening. The trumpet obligato performed by renowned trumpeter Ingrid Jensen added rich sound colors to the ensemble. Pérez’s profound comment that “everyone sees absolution” set a contemplative tone for the night.

The rhythmically swinging and virtuosic vocal/reed duo was set against rich, tight harmonies from pianist Jon Cowherd, with echoes of J.S. Bach’s Prelude in C major that led to rhythmically complex bass lines by Ben Tiberio and vibrant drumming by Keita Ogawa. The seamless transition into an elegant, sophisticated contemporary groove showcased the ensemble’s remarkable musical communication and artistic chemistry.

Exploring the Album’s Central Themes

Nature and Impermanence in “Petrichor”

Among the standout performances from the “Searching for Beauty” album was “Petrichor,” a lushly romantic piece reflecting on nature and the anticipation before rain arrives. The song featured a harmonically sophisticated stride-style accompaniment that perfectly complemented Pérez’s crystalline vocals. This piece embodies the album’s central meditation on “impermanence, human connection, and the delicate moments where beauty reveals itself in memories, landscapes, and the simple act of being present.”

Spiritual Transcendence in “Reconciliation”

“Reconciliation,” composed by pianist Jon Cowherd, opened with Pérez delivering a transcendent, almost spiritual vocalise—a wordless vocal piece reminiscent of Rachmaninoff’s eponymous work. When performed by an artist of Pérez’s extraordinary skills and emotional depth, this musical device can express melancholy, longing, or beauty with remarkable power. Pérez’s interpretation achieved her stated intent: to celebrate and experience the beauty of nature through pure vocal expression.

A Master Class in Vocal Versatility

Multilingual Artistry and Cultural Fusion

Pérez demonstrated her remarkable vocal facility in “Si Pudiera Vivir,” singing in Spanish while displaying the cultural fusion that defines her artistic identity. The album represents “a blend of Argentine folkloristic rhythms like Chacarera, Carnavalito and Zamba, jazz improvisation, and harmonies borrowed from classical impressionist music.

The interplay between bass and drums during this performance was particularly enthusiastic, showcasing the ensemble’s deep understanding of jazz sophistication and South American rhythmic traditions.

Contemporary Jazz Excellence

In “I Surrender,” Pérez created a smooth, gentle groove, while Ingrid Jensen added a distinctly “Miles Davis” flavor with her Harmon mute pressed close to the microphone. The evening concluded with Chick Corea’s “Crystal Silence,” where Pérez once again sang in syllables, delivering a powerful combination of stream-of-consciousness expression and vocalise virtuosity.

The Complete Artistic Experience

Visual and Emotional Expression

With effortless vocal facility and beautiful sound, Pérez demonstrated her evocative, extensive, and well-balanced vocal range throughout the evening. Her diction is crisp, and her tone colors, articulation, and pitch are superb. Beyond her technical mastery, Pérez shared insightful repartee with the audience and remained remarkably expressive while performing, whether singing or listening to her fellow musicians.

Watching Pérez perform is an experience unto itself. She reacts to other artists through subtle, expressive facial gestures and movements that show she is entirely present in the moment, the energy, and the music. She smiles gently and broadly, closes her eyes, purses her lips, looks up and around, wrinkles her brow, wraps her hands around her torso, and gently sways to the music. At one point, she even sat down on the stage—beckoning, charming, vulnerable, and sophisticated in equal measure.

The Album’s Deeper Message

“Searching for Beauty” represents more than musical artistry; it’s a philosophical statement. As Pérez explains, “I see it as my everlasting duty to spend my life searching for beauty, beauty to absorb my mind. Flurries of humility, like white noise. Solace in the thought this is not caused (but just is).”

The album captures nature’s indifferent wisdom: “The wind hums through the trees, waves meet the shore, the earth shifts under the weight of time, all without hesitation. In those quiet, indifferent gestures, beauty is constant—never demanding to be seen, yet always there for those who take the time to rest and listen.”
